Coach of the Week
As high school football continues around Western New York, the Buffalo Bills and ADPRO Sports are pleased to announce this week’s coaches of the week in both the Rochester and Buffalo regions.
Both coaches were selected for their work on and off the field and will receive $1,000 for their football programs. The Buffalo and Rochester Coaches of the Year will be named during the Bills’ Week 17 home game against the New England Patriots.
Rochester Region Coach of the Week #3
Avon Central School District’s Andy Englert is the coach of the week for the Rochester region after leading the Braves to a 13-6 win over Oakfield-Alabama/Elba on Saturday. Englert has led the Braves to a 3-1 record on the season. Running back and outside linebacker Wesley Farley leads the team in rushing (89.5) and receiving yards (22) per game as well as tackles (11.5) per game.
Serving as the Avon head coach for 26 years, Englert has built a winning culture with a 133-96 career record and five Section V titles. He has been named Coach of the Year for football six times and was inducted into the York Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
In addition to his duties as head coach, Englert also serves as the school’s athletic director, a position he has held for 20 years, as well as the school security aide.
Englert believes that football teaches young athletes to be dedicated, committed and accountable and that football teaches a lot about life and how to deal with challenges. As Avon has three levels of football, Englert is always finding ways to get students involved in the game.
Englert recently received the Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Award from the Local Lions Club, a recognition of the outstanding and exemplary service to the Avon community. He works with the local youth football programs on increasing participation and serving as a coach when needed.
One of Englert’s favorite football memories was the 2014 season. The team started 0-3 before winning six straight games and a Section V Class DD Championship. Englert credits his team for never giving up and staying together.
Buffalo Region Coach of the Week #3
Tim Delaney of South Park High School is the Buffalo region’s coach of the week. Delaney served as an assistant coach at Williamsville South, St. Mary’s and Lafayette High School before becoming the head coach at South Park in 2008.
He led the Sparks to a 54-30 win over West Seneca East. Quarterback Noah Willoughby completed 15 of his 18 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns, adding another score on the ground. Adam Nunes rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown.
Delaney has won three Section 6 titles and has a 91-41 career record. When he led the Sparks to the NYS Class A Championship in 2015, the Sparks became the first Buffalo Public Schools team to win a NYS football championship. Delaney’s teams have missed the playoffs just twice since 2013 and he has won seven Division championships since 2010.
Under Delaney, the football team had an academic average of 88.5 during the 2022 season. Senior captain Dreon Johnson is the school’s salutatorian with a 99 academic average.
Delaney’s coaching philosophy is centered around building relationships with his players and playing fast and physical football. His favorite memory was winning the NYS Championship in the Syracuse Carrier Dome in 2015.
